Kleinwalsertal was settled around 1270 AD and has a rich culture and many old traditions. Guests and people interested in history and culture are welcome to visit the many exhibits and folklore museums to find out more. Here are some suggestions:
People – Nature – Creation: theses are the main themes at the Naturstadl (Stadl= wooden barn standing separate on meadows). The barn is a piece of Walser history, and it holds many cultural treasures. Here, the ambiance of times past is alive, bringing back skills and pleasures almost forgotten. The exhibition shows the connection between people and the creation through various symbols and variations. The Naturstadl is not your typical museum, but rather a place to contemplate, to enjoy the smell of dirt, wood, hay and flowers.
This is the destination for people interested in the history, folklore, culture and tradition of Kleinwalsertal. The exhibition "Domestic Culture" is located on 2nd floor, next to a traditional Alp hut. On Wednesdays, by bad weather, Ms. Resi Draxler demonstrates how to make a "Chranz", the traditional headdress worn by maidens in the Walser region.
The exhibit conveys the evolution of flora and fauna in the Allgäuer Alps in an interesting and active way. You find further installments at 813-m altitude in Alten Rathaus (old town hall) in Oberstdorf and at 2037-m altitude at Fellhorn summit staton. Discover the connection between humans and nature, study the characteristics of the mountains and enjoy the full atmosphere of the majestic Alps.
